Ever wonder why we work 40 plus years, just to retire and live only another 5-15 years?
Me too:
In fact, I hate it. Why work a job we hate every day just to squeak by financially... save a little inside a 401k plan at work, and between that and social security, maybe have enough to even survive in those 5-15 years without having to repeat "Welcome to Wal-mart" all day long at the front doors of a depressing retirement.
It sounds horrible even writing it and it's not something I want for you or my family.
So, the big question: What do we have to do to make sure that doesn't happen?
Well, to start, getting on track with your finances should be at the top of the list. Things like:
Make and stick to a monthly budget,
Make goals and keep track of progress with those goals,
Pay off all debts,
Work toward maxing out your work retirement plan, Roth IRAs, etc..
Make a Financial Plan (either with your financial adviser, or by yourself),
These would all be great things to do to help accomplish having enough money in your retirement years....
BUT.... That didn't solve our "working in a J.O.B. we hate for half a century" problem.
That's the problem I was faced with not too long ago in my own life. I was stuck.
Stuck, working in a job I didn't love, doing work that didn't matter...
Was I making money and saving inside my retirement funds??
You bet! I was in fact, killing it...
I was saving a decent amount compared to what I was making, and it was moving the needle big time.
I did all the things a typical financial adviser would preach. I payed off and stayed out of debt. I saved 20% of my income in to great investments that compounded nicely through the first 18 years of my adult working career...
But I wasn't living the life I wanted... I wasn't working a job I loved. I was headed straight for the same path of the unhappy worker getting to only enjoy a few years in retirement.
What changed?
I found the thing that brought me joy... I loved helping people with money. I found that I was good at saving and understanding investing. I found the thing I loved doing more than anything else, and then I established a plan of action of how I could turn that "thing" into a daily job that paid enough money to live on.
